The idea is that we might have a particular software that we want to download which comes in several flavors, based upon architecture, portability, slim vs full, LTS, and other types, and it would be nice to not have all the possible downloads in the listing, but rather that we could open an individual template and select the specific flavor or flavors of that software which we would like to download.

For example, for 7-Zip there are 32- and 64-bit install EXEs, MSIs, source code, Windows/Linux/Mac versions, console versions...and so forth. There are fifteen different choices for the most recent version of 7-Zip!!!

A person could make fifteen different entries and individually select each one, or if one entry had a way to allow someone to checkmark just which ones they wanted to save, it would tremendously reduce the number of entries in the list and simply things considerably.

This is a similar idea to my bundles idea that I just posted before this topic, except just for one piece of software. In fact, bundles could hold these individual software "bundles" complete with the checkmarked choices.

Maybe this could be implemented by giving people the choice to make an entry for "application" or an "application family". Or, even easier would be to give all the entries the option to include various flavors of a package, by selecting the option "application family" or something like that, which would then allow for multiple flavors which could be selected by check boxes.

The rest of the templates wouldn't have to change much to implement this. Variables would just be labeled with a trailing number to indicate that they represent the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. option in the list. Maybe a button next to each flavor of a package would open up individual settings for that particular flavor.

When setting up the application family, perhaps there should be a checkbox indicating whether the settings should be duplicated from the first entry, saving time entering them all in. Most of the time, I think that the variations for a particular software package live on the same download page and might only require minimal changes. The download locations should allow each flavor to go to a different location, too.

Bundles would allow a person to setup specific collections of downloads for a particular purpose. These bundles could then be enabled or disabled selectively to be downloaded as a group. Perhaps a bundle could also have the option to place it in a specific directory (yes, I know that is easy to do manually or in a template) with the name of the bundle.

Maybe there could also be an optional ZIP function to compress a bundle for someone who wanted to easily share it with someone else or transfer it to a USB or for some other person.

The bundles would be in addition to the regular applications, so that a person could select a bundle or the application separately.

While it would be nice to have drag-and-drop capability to add applications to bundles, it could just be done via a search or scrolling through a list and selecting the applications to add.

(Since Ketarin can download all kinds of things, perhaps instead of calling them "applications", the downloads should be called "packages"? That's a more inclusive term. I've been using Ketarin to download source code, for example, which isn't really an application.)

I can imagine having bundles listed along with apps, with labels like "System Utilities", "Finance Software", "AI Models/Software", and other groupings like that, so it would be easy choose a specific group of downloads.

For clarification: Dark Mode refers to a design where the background is black and text/UI elements are white or grey. Inverted colors is not the same as DM. Also High Contrast theme in Windows is not a solution as that effects ALL programs. Even those that have native DM integration.

Proper implementation of DM problably requires some betas and feedback (for which i am volunteering my time gladly). Otherwise it may actually hurt the visibility of some UI elements.

These are great for pre-download validation and post-update & post-check failure documentation, but they don't address every scenario.

I would like one more Event Command available: Before checking for updates for an application.

When I have parallel downloads set to 1 then it's a safe bet that the next one in the list is responsible. When I have parallel set to 2 or 3 (or more) then it's a whole lot of guessing. 

This new event would trigger before any variables were parsed (other than the name) so that I can log the progress of "update all" or "check for updates" on a selection.

This would allow me to write the pre-parse progress to a permanent log file so I can better troubleshoot errors. Currently, when Ketarin crashes (which isn't often, but is often enough that it's frustrating) I have to guess which application is responsible and which variable or URL it was within the application that might be causing the problem. I can work around some of this with special variables and the ":ps" function, but more difficult than it could be to figure out which one is responsible.

Alternatively (or in addition to) there would be an option to write to a log file that mirrors the activity in the real-time log (CTRL+L). This could either be one massive file (ketarin.log), or based on the date, or based on variables (like "ketarin-{yyyy}{MM}{dd}{hh}{mm}.log" or "ketarin-{category}.log" or even based on the "save as" destination with an additional ".log" appended: "..\{category}\{appname:regexreplace:([\s\t\r\n\-\&]+):_}-{version}.{url:ext}.log" where as-yet-unparsed variables would be replaced with dashes or underscores). Each application should have the log file name preserved for the duration of the specific application, so if the log file name were "ketarin-{yyyy}{MM}{dd}T{hh}{mm}.log" at 20240414T1345 and it took 4 minutes to process the application, all log records relating to that application update would be written to that log even though the time were actually 20240414T1349 by the time it was done.

There should be a global setting that limits parallel connections per site/domain, so that only apps using this domain are limited while the rest of the apps are still running simultaneously (connecting to other domains).

A workaround is to export the app, edit the XML, then reimport it. But either solution is too much work for a simple rename!

The list shows content that goes back to 2014 which funny enough is Google Chrome in the Top 50, but if I search Chrome it shows 2019, how come this hasn't updated?

I suspect it is because the server / web page is, as part of the CloudFlare DDoS protection, doing a sophisticated check against the Ketarin WebEngine which it does not respond properly to, thus resulting in a 503 error in Ketarin.

It'd be nice if the engine would support this. (-:
